The short answer
Emergency pyometra surgery for a dog in the Newark and Northern Delaware corridor starts at $1,100 through our network. Corporate emergency hospitals serving the same area routinely quote $2,500 to $5,000.
Pyometra is diagnosed at an awful moment — your dog is visibly unwell and the situation is urgent — and that is exactly when owners are least equipped to evaluate a number. This page sets it out plainly.
For the clinical detail, see our pyometra surgery service.

What is included in the $1,100
Every pyometra case includes:
pre-anesthetic PCV / total protein and BUN / creatinine screening · IV fluid resuscitation · broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics · emergency ovariohysterectomy with careful uterine stump ligation · sterile abdominal lavage where indicated · continuous SpO2, ECG, blood pressure and temperature monitoring · home-recovery medications · structured discharge checklist · 24/7 recovery text line · complimentary 10-to-14 day healing evaluation.
What is quoted on top
Diagnostic imaging. Radiographs or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and assess uterine distension. Frequently needed, and quoted before it happens.
Extended inpatient support. Dogs who arrive severely septic, hypotensive, or in shock need more intensive stabilisation and longer monitoring. We will tell you if your dog is in that category before surgery, not after.
Additional laboratory panels beyond the pre-anesthetic screen, where the clinical picture warrants them.
What actually changes the price
The single biggest variable is how sick your dog is when she arrives.
A stable open pyometra — a dog who is off her food and lethargic, with discharge, but whose bloodwork is reasonable — sits at the bottom of the range. She is stabilised over a few hours and operated on.
A septic closed pyometra — a dog with no discharge, a severely distended uterus, low blood pressure, and elevated kidney values — needs more fluid resuscitation, more monitoring, longer surgery, and more post-operative support. That case costs more.
The difference between those two dogs is very often how long the condition went unrecognised. If your intact female is unwell after a season, that is the point to call.
Why our pricing is lower
Our network coordinates experienced general practice veterinary surgeons across Northern Delaware and the Pennsylvania corridor. They already perform emergency ovariohysterectomy regularly, and they operate with a fraction of the overhead of a corporate emergency hospital.
That difference reaches you. What does not change is the protocol: pre-anesthetic bloodwork, IV antibiotics, and continuous multi-parameter monitoring are standard, not options.
Comparing an emergency quote
Emergency estimates are hard to read under pressure. Ask these:
- Is pre-anesthetic bloodwork included?
- Are IV fluids and antibiotics included or itemised on top?
- Which parameters are monitored during anesthesia, and by whom?
- Are post-operative medications included?
- Is the follow-up recheck free?
Financing
We accept cash, credit card, and CareCredit. Pyometra is the classic unplanned expense, and CareCredit spreads it over monthly payments. Tell us at the point of contact if cost is a barrier — there is usually more flexibility than owners expect.
Scheduling in the Newark corridor
The Newark, Bear, Glasgow, and Middletown corridor has grown faster than its veterinary surgical capacity, which is why local owners so often hear about waitlists. Pyometra does not go on a waitlist. These are same or next-day priorities.
If your dog is collapsing, cannot keep water down, or has a rigid painful abdomen, go to your nearest emergency hospital immediately for stabilisation, then contact us about the surgery.
For local coverage and access, see our dog surgery in Newark page.
The prevention worth mentioning
Spaying removes the risk entirely. Our Premium Spay packages — pre-anesthetic blood panels, continuous monitoring, multi-modal pain control, cosmetic subcuticular closures — start at $245. Against an emergency pyometra at $1,100 and a genuinely unwell dog, the arithmetic is not close.
